Our family here at Durango Mountain Resort is excited to share some exciting news with you!
As you may have heard, Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort is changing owners. After an extensive process, Chuck Cobb and the DMR shareholder group, including the Duncan family, have entered into an agreement to sell 100% of DMR’s ski resort assets to James Coleman, a Durango-based businessman and avid skier.
James, who grew up skiing at Purgatory, was raised in Texas and has an undergrad and MBA degree from the University of Texas at Austin. With a career rooted in real estate development and private equity investment, James has lived in Durango for nearly a decade. His children attend school in Durango; his son is very active on the Purgatory Ski Team, his daughter is involved in track and dance, and James’ wife actively volunteers at non-profits in the community. James is passionate about both the history of Purgatory and shaping the vision and future of our year-round destination resort.
James is eager to put his passion for skiing and knowledge of resort operations and development to work at Purgatory. As the managing partner at Sipapu for the past 15 years, he understands how to successfully operate a ski resort and has doubled Sipapu’s skiable terrain. James’ commitment to snowmaking has also helped Sipapu earn a reputation for being the first ski area open in New Mexico for the past 11 seasons. James and his team will also manage operations at Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, located in Los Alamos, NM, beginning this season and is in the process of acquiring Arizona Snowbowl located in Flagstaff, AZ.
Together these four southwestern ski resorts, Purgatory, Snowbowl, Pajarito and Sipapu, will form the largest ski collective in the Southwestregion, totaling more than 3,000 skiable acres, 26 lifts, more than 200 trails and 13 terrain parks.
James is committed to expediting the approved projects in Durango Mountain Resort’s Master Development Plan, including adding new terrain and making lift improvements, while maintaining a focus on value and the family-friendly nature of Purgatory.
Our entire management team will be staying on board the new ownership after the transaction closes (hopefully before the ski season) so the team that has run and improved your resort over the last several decades will not change.
We hope that you are just as excited as we are about this new era for Purgatory. We will continue to share news of new products, new season pass opportunities and more as this new partnership continues to develop. Please join me in welcoming James Coleman and his team to our Durango Mountain Resort family.
