Global Soap Project

Global Soap Project

Durango Mountain Resort is pleased to be a part of the Global Soap Project. With lodging occupants rarely using up a complete bar of soap, our housekeeping staff gathers used soap bars daily to provide hygienic options for third-world countries.

Each year, an estimated 2.4 million children die from hygiene and sanitation related illnesses.  The Global Soap Project (GSP) is working to prevent those deaths and improve global health, by reprocessing used hotel soap and turning it into new bars that are distributed to vulnerable populations around the world.  GSP works with organizations that have existing operations in these communities to ensure the soap is distributed to those in need and to ensure that proper hygiene education is provided in addition to the soap.  GSP’s goal is to ensure impact is sustained, so it works with its partners to create both short-term and long-term positive outcomes.

Says Laura Miller, “We just feel this is something we can do to help others, and that is always the right way to go. DMR’s focus on giving back to the community with local benefit days, event non-profit beneficiaries and now GSP, holds true to always striving to pay it forward.  And after all, our housekeepers have said that it’s just as easy to toss that used bar of soap into a bag as it is to toss it in the trash – so why not do the right thing.”

With 4.6-million hotel/motel rooms in the United States, an estimated 2.6-million soap bars are discarded every day. By participating in the program, hoteliers are diverting many tons of waste from the landfill and are bolstering environmental sustainability programs. Hotel managers, housekeepers and guests become more environmentally conscious and more sensitive to the needs of vulnerable populations.

Durango Mountain Resort has taken this effort even a step further by contacting every other hotel/motel in the area to gather together the community for this cause.

Q. How long has DMR been a part of this program?
A.  Since November, 2011.

Q.  Is the GSP soap really safe?
A.  Yes!  Soap is an antibacterial product whose sole purpose is to kill germs.  Bacteria cannot grow on soap.  GSP exercises extreme caution in sorting, cleaning and processing soap to ensure its integrity.  In addition, an outside lab confirms the safety of random samples on a regular basis.

Q. Where can I go to get more info or to take part in this program?
A. or view the article posted in the Durango Herald here.

Web Manager Note: This is a very cool program. I actually save up all the tiny soap bars at my house and bring them in as well. If you'd like to do the same, let us know.
