PURGATORY HOSTS WACKY SNOW GAMES
Resort is 100 percent open with great conditions for wilder version of Olympic sports
Purgatory, CO – Snowdown, the biggest and wildest party in Durango, hit Purgatory Mountain this weekend with events including Downhill Kayak Races and Mountain Bike Dual Slalom. This year’s theme was Disco Do It, and athletes turned out in their best Disco apparel to take on summer Olympic activities on the snow.Conditions were great for Snowdown after the resort received 50 inches of new snow since the first of the year. Purgatory is 100 percent open, with 85 trails and 10 chairlifts, including one of the best halfpipes in the southwest.
All Snowdown events took place in the resort’s Columbine Beginner’s Area. Participation was free and brought out die-hard summer enthusiasts, as well as first timers. The Downhill Kayak races allowed each racer runs down the SnowCoaster Tubing Hill lanes. The best run was determined by the racer who crossed the finish line the fastest and with the fewest flips. A slick bottom was the key to success and participants used everything from ski wax to Pam. Matt Tucker was crowned the winner with a time of 5.41 seconds. Local Brad Johnson was awarded the best crash of the day.
The Mountain Bike Dual Slalom was a fight to the end with athletes suiting up in full mountain bike gear to conquer the course set up on the snow. Two racers were pit against each other in heats that pared down the competition to the final two competitors. This year’s event had a regular mountain bike heat and a unicycle heat with 6 brave soles attempting the snowy course on just one wheel. Ed Mosiman won the unicycle heat and Eric Ranson won the regular heat.
Video Package includes:
