FREE CONCERT ROCKS PURGY'S BEACH
Winter Beats Music Festival, Halfpipe competition and Snowshoeing this weekend
Durango, CO - This Saturday, February 19, Purgatory hosts the 2nd Annual Adventure Tours Winter Beats Music Festival, an all day event with FREE live entertainment including five bands and DJ's from around the nation. The concert will begin at 12:30 pm outside on Purgy's beach, and will continue indoors at Purgy's from 6:30 pm to closing. The Winter Beats Music Festival lineup includes Denver Harbor, 2Dimes and Phunk Junkeez. The concert is free, with fundraising donations being accepted by local radio station KDUR.
Though its heart beats with a driving punk-rock pulse, Denver Harbor draws inspiration from the jagged post-punk ambience of the Cure, the skittering reggae-punk of the Police, the huge dynamic crashes of Nirvana-and those are just the most obvious signposts.
Formed in 1991, Arizona's rap-rock pioneers Phunk Junkeez quickly became an underground phenomenon fusing non-conformist phunk-punk, with the sounds of trip-hop and straight up rock n' roll.
The concert starts off with acoustic guitarist Scott Worstell and area DJ's, followed by 2Dimes at 3:15 pm, Denver Harbor at 4:20 pm, and Phunk Junkeez at 5:15 pm. 2Dimes returns for a second set at 7:15 pm, followed by DJ's until close.
Saturday morning, the Expression Session Series continues with the Halfpipe competition. Skiers and boarders of all ages are invited to compete, or watch, the competition that takes place in the newly designed and re-located Halfpipe in the Paradise Freestyle Arena. Registration begins at 8:30 am and competition starts at 10:30 am. An awards ceremony will be hosted on the Winter Beats Music Festival stage at 3 pm. Helmets are required and athletes under 18 must have a parent present at registration. For more information on the Halfpipe competition contact the Purgatory Ski & Snowboard School at 970-385-2149.
Sunday evening enjoy the full moon with a Moonlight Snowshoe tour around Purgatory Mountain. Due to popular demand, the resort has added an extra evening of trekking around the mountain top under the moonlight. Participants will take the last chair of the day up the mountain and explore Purgatory Mountain during sunset hours. After a social gathering featuring wine, cheese and fruit, the group will make its way back down the mountain with the moonlight as their guide. The tour costs $49 and includes snowshoe rentals. For more information or to sign up for the Moonlight Snowshoe Tour contact Guest Services at 385-2147.
