MORE SNOW EQUALS LONGER SEASON
Purgatory extends season after 10 inches blanket the resort
Durango, CO – Another week, another storm. It’s a pattern that has lead Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort to extend its winter season for an additional week. Another 10 inches of snow fell on the resort after a storm system moved into the area late on Wednesday night, and another 6-14 inches are possible today through Friday. With more than 21 feet of snow in just 10 weeks, the resort expects the quality mid-mountain base depth to withstand an additional week of skiing and snowboarding.
Purgatory will now be open March 31- April 6th with skiing and snowboarding from 10 am to 4 pm. Three chairlifts (Chairs 1, 3 and 8) will operate, providing access to both the front and backsides of the mountain, with additional chairlifts in the Columbine Beginner’s Area available as needed. Lift tickets will be $40 for adults and season passes will be valid during the extended season.
“This is an opportunity for us to thank our guests, share our incredible conditions and say goodbye, one last time, to Purgy’s,” says Hank Thiess, president of resort operations. “The conditions this season have exceeded our expectations and we felt we owed it to the snow gods to stay open one more week.”
The new closing weekend will be a celebration for the final season of Purgy’s, which is housed in the resort’s original day lodge. A new Purgy’s will open next winter season as a part of the first phase of Purgatory Lodge, the resort’s $100 million, three-phase project in the heart of Purgatory Village.
Former employees of Purgatory Mountain from all decades of the resort are invited to participate in this commemorative weekend. The celebration will include live music, drink specials, games and activities and a small bonfire as we sacrifice Purgy’s to the snow gods in hopes of another great winter next season.
