PURGATORY RECEIVES LAND STEWARDSHIP AWARD

Durango, CO – Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort has been honored with the Business Steward of the Year Award from the Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado. The Colorado Land Stewardship Awards recognize outstanding individuals, conservation organizations and members of the business community who demonstrate commitment, leadership and vision to the preservation and enhancement of Colorado’s public lands.

Purgatory is being honored for participating in the National Forest Foundation’s Ski Conservation Fund, an environmental program also supported by Copper Mountain, Vail Resorts and Winter Park in Colorado. The National Forest Foundation matched its federal funds with donations voluntarily made by guests at Durango Mountain Resort. The fees are available to local non-profit groups to implement conservations, restoration and recreation projects that benefit the San Juan National Forest.

Beginning this season, guests at Durango Mountain Resort will receive invitations to donate $1 to participate in the program with their check-in packets and in the hotel rooms at resort properties. The funds collected will then be distributed to local organization dedicated to maintaining and preserving area land.

This is the second honor that Durango Mountain Resort has received this year in recognition of their environmental stewardship. Earlier this summer the resort was a finalist for the National Ski Area’s Association Silver Eagle Award for Conservation. The resort continues to be an active participant in environmental programs and was specifically recognized for it’s recycling, biodiesel fuel use, and carpool programs.
