SUMMER SEASON FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Daily activities, festivals and competitions on Purgatory Mountain’s summer calendar
Durango, CO –Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort is the quintessential Rocky Mountain getaway. Set deep in the beautiful San Juan Mountains 25 miles north of Durango, the resort touts activities for the whole family, festival and concert events throughout the summer and world class adventure racing and mountain bike competitions.
Daily activities at Purgatory include the popular Alpine Slide, Climbing Wall, Mini and Disc Golf and Summer Chairlift for scenic rides and more than 50 miles of mountain biking and hiking trails. The Total Adventure Ticket provides unlimited access to these activities, half day Total Adventure Tickets and individual activity tickets are also available.
Guided trips in and around the resort are the best ways to explore the Rocky Mountains. The San Juan Mountain Association offers free guided nature hikes during the summer season and llama hikes with picnic lunches in the wilderness. Mountain Bike Adventures runs guided rides and Purgatory Sports can set you up with equipment. Other area activities include backcountry climbing trips for all levels with Animas City Rock and guided fly fishing with Animas Valley Anglers.
Highlights of Durango Mountain Resort’s summer schedule include the return of the Red Bull Divide & Conquer mountain sports relay on June 18. The one day race begins in Silverton, finishes in Purgatory Village and features trail running, paragliding, kayaking and mountain biking. Gravity Play Sports will host the 5th annual Adventure Xstream adventure race series on June 11 and the Mountain Bike 100 will run August 6.
Summer festivals and concerts include the 19th annual Music in the Mountains Classical Concert Series July 17 – August 7, with chamber music and conservatory performances, plus the fan-favorite Pop’s Night. The San Juan Brewfest rounds out the summer over Labor Day Weekend. Keep an eye out for concerts in the village plaza and mountain bike races throughout the season.
Kids Summer Adventure Camp begins June 13 with activities for children ages 6-13 including hiking, climbing wall, ropes course and more. The camp runs weekdays through August 12. Individual camp sessions are $35 with weekly, half-session and full-session rates available. Call 385-2149 for information and registration.
