New This Summer
June 15, 2010, Durango, CO – Twenty years ago this summer, Purgatory put
mountain biking on the global map by hosting the Inaugural World Mountain Bike Championships. Two decades later, the resort once again is bringing cycling to the forefront by partnering with Durango Coca-Cola and Trails 2000 on the new, state-of-the-art Durango Coca-Cola Bike Park, featuring both a short track and a gravity-fed pump track. The new short track will see its share of racing action this summer as the site for two segments of the DEVO short-track racing series and the first race of the Durango Coca-Cola Triple Crown series coming up on Saturday, June 19. For racers and recreational riders, Purgatory and Trails 2000 crews are redesigning sections of the 1990 World Mountain Bike XC course for a new and improved riding experience.
Also new this summer, riders who are new to mountain biking or looking to refine their skills can receive expert instruction and guided tours from Hermosa Tours. “Intro to Mountain Biking” is a fun, low-pressure overview of mountain biking basics, including the bike itself, proper gear, shifting, braking and the importance of riding position and balance. Riders then will practice some of these points on various obstacles and riding scenarios. Hermosa Tours also offers single- and multi-day tours for families and riders from novice to expert.
For those who would rather explore Purgatory’s trail system on foot, hikers of all fitness levels can spend a night under the stars and experience the natural beauty of the high country on a lift-assisted backpacking tour from Kling Mountain Guides. Tours include food, tents, lift tickets, backpacks and an expert, local guide. Also new from KMG is the Purgatory Challenge Course at Durango Mountain Resort. The Challenge Course includes a full ropes course and elements for all skill levels and interests, from family fun to corporate team-building.
Back in Purgatory Plaza, guests can pan for “gold” and gems with the newly expanded and improved Durango Mining Company or shop for the latest mountain gear at Backcountry Experience, now open for summer. Refreshing treats will be served from the new ice cream machine in the Village Market and Deli and the new “Purgy’s Portable Café” at the base of Chair 4. Purgy’s restaurant also will be offering a new, custom burrito station for lunch and hosting several Bear Bar BBQ nights for dinner on Purgy’s patio.
