Skier and Snowboarder Safety

Here at Durango Mountain Resort, we love to ski and ride. The breathtaking alpine setting, the adventure of exploring mountainous terrain, and the physical challenge make for a hard-to-beat combination.

We hope you agree and will enjoy your sport for years to come.  The safety and well-being of you and your family is a top priority. Because there are some risks that are inherent to the sports of skiing and riding, we encourage you to take the time to educate yourself about those risks and to adhere to a few basic “rules of the mountain” during your visit with us.

The National Ski Areas Association established “Your Responsibility Code” in 1966 as a code of ethics for all skiers on the mountain. Today, the code reflects not only skier safety, but snowboarder and lift safety as well.  Ultimately, safe skiing and riding at Durango Mountain Resort is everyone’s responsibility. Following “Your Responsibility Code” will help all skiers and snowboarders have a safer mountain experience.

“Your Responsibility Code”
► Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
► People ahead of you have the right of way.  It is your responsibility to avoid them.
► You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above.
► Whenever starting downhill or merging onto a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
► Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
► Observe all posted signs and warnings.  Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
► Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

We wish you a safe and enjoyable experience at Durango Mountain Resort.

High Altitude
While you’re visiting, please remember that Durango Mountain Resort’s base is more than 8,000 feet above sea level and the mountain summit is at nearly 11,000 feet. Typically, your body adjusts to a higher altitude within 24-36 hours, but it may affect you differently to one degree or another. In order to be as comfortable as possible, please pay attention to your body’s signals.  Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and be mindful of your alcohol intake. Don’t overexert yourself and begin with light activity to acclimate your body. Symptoms associated with high altitude sickness may include headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, restless sleep, coughing and difficulty in breathing. If symptoms persist or if you have a concern about your health, you should seek medical attention.  Finally, remember to wear sunscreen throughout your trip, even on cloudy winter days.
